As early as the prehistoric ages, the image of the ox served as the target of artistic depiction in both the East and the West. The ox is depicted as a symbol of power, hardworking, even of love and contribution. During the Tang and the Song Dynasties, Chinese traditional painting gradually reached the highest level. Han Huang (?-329 A.D.) of the Tang Dynasty, Li Di (917-1047 A. D.) and Zhang Zeduan (1085 - 1145 A.D.) of the Song Dynasty, were all well known masters of ox painting. In modern times, Qi Baishi (1864-1957), Xu Beihong (1896-1953), and Li Keran (1907-1989) were the most outstanding.

When I created “The Ox Story Series”, I focus on the concern of power and justice by exaggerating, to the extreme, certain parts of the ox body to represent two most prominent characteristics of the animal: power and tenacity. Formally, I try to break away from tradition and do my best to bring about the shocking and appealing quality of the painting.

Ode to the Oxen

Q.X. Wang

Setting out in Prehistoric Ages,

Till today the journey is not yet done.

With dust

Our backs are covered,

To the Horizon

The road under beneath our hooves extends.

Rumbling the Earth,

Here WE come!

The path is made smooth,

Once we set our hooves on anything uneven.

I defy evil and yearn after justice.
